Joiri Minaya’s pan-tropical decolonial project

So jam-packed have the last four months of my life been that seems like a lifetime ago now, but in October 2019, I was able to interview Joiri Minaya about her art. I was really taken with her and her ideas–so much so that I convinced no less than four students in the Nationalism in the Caribbean course I TA’d last semester to write about her installation, Labadee, as part of their final projects. I feel very humbled to have spoken with her and to think through the ways she, and other visual artists, are able to take complex theory and make it instantly understandable. My conversation with her became the foundation for a write up on her work that went live in December–linked here under Elsewhere (alas! not before Labadee left the Blanton). I’m hoping to transcribe our conversation in time for her next Austin installation (which I have hopes will be soon!). In the meantime, please enjoy these pictures of my boyfriend engaging Labadee.
